Neverwhere

I just finished neverwhere, about 2 minutes ago. I feel abit like I did when i finished Sandman, kind of an odd sad feeling, little more then the usualy pangs of finishing a good book. Neverwhere is a book i wholly enjoyed, my only complaint would be the ending, perhaps there could have been a bit more to it, but other than that it was really fantastic, you care about the characters, the villians are interesting and evil, there's an odd bit of english humor through out that lightens the tone, all and all a great read. It's hard to talk about though, so little can be said with out ruining the book.

Everytime i read something by gaiman, i think about my stories and am a bit discoraged, he has such a way whit characters that i don't seem to be able to develop. Their so...real for lack of a better way of putting it, they have a natural feel to them, hopes dreams desires, they have favorite tv shows, places they like, don't like. I don't maybe i just need to focus more, but i still can only seem to grasp things at a scene to scene level, my characters are so painfully 2 dimensional if i stand them next to his. Though i ges that's why he gets paid and i still work on 5th drafts of the same sections with little ability to string the scenes into a cohesive mass. ugh.

one slightly related note, it is fucking amazing the geographic detail in neverwhere, like with some clive barker books that take place in england, do all the english have some kind of cartography ablity to them? I know they can look things up as their writing, but damn, it flows so well, i've lived places for years and would never be able to write something that has that kind of natural direction sense and a story, i can barly give people directions to and from places i have been a hundred times.

Current State: a bit sad
